Early telegraphic equipoment One of the largest telegraph systems in Canada was the Canadian National Telegraph, a division of Canadian National Railways. The telegraph communicated changes in schedules and track conditions thus being instrumental in the smooth operation of the railroad network. Lenci Ceramics Founded in Turin in 1919, the Lenci company started out with the production of very popular felt dolls which are highly collectible in today's market. The name Lenci is an acronym for the English translation of "Play is our constant quest". By 1929 the production of ceramics began with the production of figurines, wall plaques and pottery. Many of the designs were created by Elena Konig Scavini who was partner, both in the business and in marriage to Enrico Scavini, co-founder. Starting in the 1950's, Lenci produced Disney figures under license, such as Dumbo, Pinnocchio, Peter Pan and Bambi. The company was in operation for 83 years before closing the doors on production.

German beer steins Circa 1750 Photographs: Jackie Freeman Photgraphy |
German Beer Steins
Stein is a shortened version of Steinzeugkrug, which is German for "stoneware jug or tankard". In general, stein has come to mean any beer container with a hinged lid and a handle.
The origin of the beer stein dates back to the 14th century and was an innovation to protect consumers from disease carrying insects. By 1750 there were over 4000 breweries in Bavaria and so the production of the beer stein increased dramatically. The Pewter Guilds kept the lidded design of the stein from disappearing and German potters kept up with the manufacture of a porcelain substitute called faience to keep steins available for the common man. Because of the thumblift on the hinged lid, these containers could be used with one hand, quite ingenious! Today steins can be found in many different materials and collectors each have their own favourite. |
