Peter Pöppelmann: German sculptor and draftsman

Biography:

Peter Pöppelmann: German sculptor and draftsman was born on April 24th 1866 in Harswinkel in Westphalia Germany.

Born the son of a carpenter Ferdinand and Gertrude Pöppelmann, it was a natural progression therefore that his first training was with his father as a carpenter, though he rapidly became interested in carving, particularly in wood as well as stone.

At the age of twenty in 1886 he worked as a journeyman (senior apprentice) in various German cathedrals restoring and creating ecclesiatical furniture before joining the sculptor Henry Fleige in Munster where he continued his artistic and sculptural training.

By his 26th birthday Peter Pöppelmann was employed as a full time technician in the studio of Bernhard Kurt Roch, a master sculptor in Dresden.

There Pöppelmann was able to exercise his artistic talents fully under the guidance of the master.

In1897 Peter Pöppelmann received the gold medal from the Dresden Academy exhibition and in 1900 he joined the Dresden Art Academy.

His achievements and talent flourished and by 1906 Peter Pöppelmann became an extraordinary member of the Berlin Secession and in 1907, he was made an honorary member of the Dresden Academy of Arts.

At the age of 81 years, he died in Dresden on the 6th of November 1947.

Works by Peter Pöppelmann are held in the State Art Collection in Dresden, also in museums in Karlsruhe, Leipzig, Munster and Oldenburg.
Pöppelmann created figures , statues and decorations for the city hall and the Church of Christ in Dresden and for the Jakobikirche in Freiberg / Saxony.
In his native city of Harsewinkel, his most celebrated sculpture The Bathers has been held since 2001.
