Johann Georg Schönfelder II - Luthier ( Violin maker) of Germany |
|
A fine violin dated and signed by Johann Georg Schönfelder 1799 branded: I.G.S |
The German Luthier extraordinaire, violin maker Johann Georg Schönfelder II of Markneukirchen, Germany, was one of a long line of German violin makers or 'Luthiers.' ( a traditionally skilled craftsman who makes stringed instruments such as lutes or guitars or in this case, violins) Though little is recorded of his life, Schönfelder's talent was exceptional both as a maker of violins and as a musician who trained many violin maker apprentices himself and musicians. In the final analysis, the Schönfelder family concern was to be taken over by one of Schonfelder's most talented apprentices Johan Gottlob Heberlein and revert to the Heberlein family who have made exquisite violins up until the present day |

It dates from 1944 when the Schönfelder violin was first purchased from another famous German violin maker and dealer Albert Guth. This Schönfelder violin has been passed down through the family to the current owner, now living in Saskatchewan.
