The Days Mills Butter Contest |

Ryrie Building, Toronto

Days Mills, Ontario no longer exists, except perhaps in the images held in Algomas museums and in the memories of some of the old timers. But in Victorian Canada, it thrived as a small town complete with its own saw mill, creek and a grist mill owned as was much of the town by the Harris family.
Old Mill Upper Canada: The annual village show was one of the highlights of the year and local hopefuls baked and potted, canned and aimed to grow the biggest, in readiness for the annual battle of the best before the shows prestigious judges.
One such hopeful was Great Grandma Elizabeth Harris and yes, that is a namesake of the founding fathers of the town. So I suppose it was only natural that she'd be a winner somewhere along the line. Yet is wasn't to be the biggest pumpkin, the tastiest blueberry jam and not even the yummiest fruit loaf. It was for the best butter pat!
For her efforts, she was awarded a solid silver medal. Made by Ryrie brothers in Toronto, the Harris' certainly didn't spare any change on providing the village shows trophies as Ryrie brothers had a reputation of being Toronto's finest jewellers and were jewellers to the Govenor General of Canada!
Well done Granny Harris.
